I am right there with you on the Russian name issue. The first Russian novel I read was "The Brothers Karamazov" and it took so long because I had no idea what was going on. In fact, I plan to read it again because I feel better prepared this time.
I agree on the women issue when it comes to The Bros. K. It seems that just 90 years ago, men thought us women were very fragile and prone to "hysterics", "fainting", "heart palpitations" and "vapors".
It is amusing to me to be reading a book from way back in that time period by a male author and see him write about women in such a way.
