Years ago, there was a made-for-TV adaptation of the story, and at least one person I know of who watched it had a similar "rooting for him to succeed" reaction, this despite everyone knowing he would fail.

Forsyth also wrote The Odessa File and some short stories with O. Henry-esque endings.
