I really wish that true crime books would stick to third person observation from the facts presented and stop making up POV to add drama. Your review is really good - It sounds as if the book crossed the line into splatter-punk horror and used Knight to write horror rather than true crime. Not that the facts of the crime don't already cross into splatter-punk; they do. But you don't need quasi-fictional details to make it horrific.
I'm with you. I want non-fiction to be just that. Yeah he definitely crossed the lines at the most salacious bits. And you're right in this case there was no need to fictionalize it to make it horrific. Trying to serve his head to his kids was horrific enough
