Namaah's Kiss, Jacqueline Carey. Grand Central Publishing, 2009

Reading time: July 2-8. Breaks, "too hot to sleep" and "not sleepy yet"

I had to miss Carey's last signing at the "local" bookstore (the one 20min away by highway, as opposed to the one 10min away by foot), but my husband was kind enough to get this signed for me. And pass on my warm regards to the friends who got me hooked into this series.

Namaah's Kiss is set in the same world as the two Kushiel series, but picks up about 5 generations later. The events in the first two series are referred to in the context of romantic history, tales told to pass the time on long journeys. It tells of how Alais's descendant, Moirin, discovered that her destiny is to travel very far and help others discover their strengths and follies as she learns to master her own.

This is again, a complex tale best read when one has several hours, although the 70-jillion chapter breaks offer easy pacing. My husband recently started a part-time job that gets him up halfway through my sleep cycle, so I spent a couple nights staying up to read. The heat wave contributed to my insomnia. I consider these factors to be mixed blessings, since it all gave me more time to read, but left me tired and antipathic towards work. ( you know, that thing you do to pay for the shelter what keeps the books dry while you read.)

The funniest part was when I realized the dragon kept asking "are we there yet?"
