Zoe's Tale, John Scalzi. 400p. 2008, Tor Books.
Reading Time: June 28-july 1. Breaks, Commute.
Scalzi has a loose trilogy of novels that started with Old Man's War. The story takes two steps back and three forward with The Ghost Brigades, then continues forward with The Last Colony. Zoe's Tale is The Last Colony from the perspective of a teenage girl -- the one whose rescue was the highlight of TGB. Her story is an essential part of the series, because it fills in gaps in TLC and explains what really happened when problems were suddenly solved.
Scalzi tells a wonderful story that pulls me in and lets me immerse myself in another world. This is good, because that's why I read: to escape, to keep myself from thinking overmuch about life and how I'm going to pay for gas next week. If I don't have something to distract me during a car ride, I end up stressed, depressed, and cranky.
So reading is good.
