A Girl's Guide to Guns and Monsters, ed. by Martin H. Greenburg and Kerrie Hughes. 299 p. 2010, Daw/Penguin Books.
Reading time: June 3-5, Work Breaks.
This was another anthology, with stories about women who can kick butt with the rest of them. Stories about making the hard choices, sacrificing family and self to protect others. A mother lets a burdensome child die to protect the other from a family curse, a sister hunts down her rabid brother.
This was a good assortment. Not everyone killed the monster and lived happily ever after. Not every story was a fantasy. The range made for unpredictibility, which led to better entertainment. I managed to hit the shorter stories during my breaks, and the longer ones during my lunch.
I can't say any particular story is my favorite. The lost Pookah, the Broken Curse, a wood nymph who begs a priest to help her avenge her lover's death. Each woman has her reasons for doing what she does, and it's not just love.
