Mai did not want to be with Ling and Lan Fan, but traveling to Xing in one day was impossible. What would prolong the journey was that they had to take the sea route, because of Lan Fan's automail.
However, it proved interesting. Mei was romantic, and tended to notice little things. First, the way Lan Fan spoke to Ling: polite, formal, and almost shy. Mei thought it do to her being his guardian, but when Mei said something negative about Ling, Lan Fan gave her a fearsome glare. It was after this that she started to notice other things.
There was a certain gleam in Lan Fan's eyes when she spoke to Ling, and Mei almost always saw her blushing, and Ling always showed a soft smile when they talked, and he became defensive of Lan Fan easily. An indifferent third party might not notice these things, but when Mei looked they were as obvious as an elephant in a field.
As soon as they stopped at an inn Mei began to try and think of a plan to fix their glaring issue. Yet Lan Fan, despite being aware of Mei's agenda, seemed determined to not give her much time to think.
"We leave first thing in the morning," She said. Mei frowned. She was annoyed that did not take advantage of this. They were lucky, being together like this. She had to leave Alphonse behind in Central, and she did not know when she was going to see him. She leaned against the door of her room, which was separate from Ling's, and looked at Xiao Mei.
"They're like a broken machine. A train that can't reach the station," She said. She clenched her fists, Xiao Mei mimicking her "So we must repair it! I cannot not let this romantic injustice stand!"
As if the heavens had heard her declaration, the heavens opened up and poured rain the next morning.
"So we stay another night?" Mei asked, feigning disappointment.
"It seems so," Lan Fan said, looking out the window and holding her automail. "Ugh, I hate this,"
"Is your arm malfunctioning?" Ling asked, concerned.
"No, my mechanic said it's normal to be sore when it rains,"
Unable to help herself, Mei said, "Perhaps a message would help?"
"I don’t think it'd make a difference," Lan Fan said.
Ling shrugged, saying, “It couldn't hurt." He followed Mei's suggestion, slowly rubbing Lan Fan's automail.
"Any better?" He asked. Lan Fan ignored the question, turning away and walking towards the stairs
"I'll rest upstairs," She said, her face crimson. Ling turned slowly in the opposite direction, watching her.
"I'll . . . get some more tea," He said. When they both left, Mei sighed.
"Xiao Mei, they might be more than one girl can fix,"
She was depressed that she could not think of another plan, but later when she could not find them anywhere and the 'do not disturb' sign on Ling's door, she thought the problem might repair itself.
