Review: The Last Jedi

Jan 05, 2018 23:21

Thinking some more about The Last Jedi, now I've had a few weeks to digest it - and gotten back from my holidays. Indonesia's national parks are beautiful!

I think there's two main issues I have with it. One's somewhat unavoidable and unintentional, but the other is a real weakness of the film as it stands.

movies, star wars, the last jedi

I was majorly weirded out at some parts of the film when I first watched it, but I immensely enjoyed it during my second viewing, and my opinion only improved with my subsequent two viewings ( ... )

I think the lack of a timeskip is a problem, yes - the two movies take place over, what, maybe four or five days, at most? It's hard to buy that Rey's got any interest in redeeming Kylo when he was torturing her literally the day before.

(For that matter, is the scene at the end the first time Finn, Poe and Rey are all in the same place? That's... weird to realize.)

Technically Finn, Poe, and Rey were all in the same place at the end of TFA, except Finn was in a coma, so not sure if that counts.

On that note, I thought it was hilarious that they made Poe and Rey introduce themselves to one another at the end of TLJ, especially since they'd already shoehorned in an introduction in the TFA novelization.

Ohhh so THAT'S where I saw Rey and Poe meet! I knew it hadn't happened in TFA on screen but couldn't shake the feeling that they had met. I chalked it up to some fic I must've read. That introduction makes me wonder what's in store for them in the next film... but maybe that's what we're supposed to wonder, and it won't mean anything at all.

You make a lot of good points. I think I'm able to enjoy the movie more than a lot of others might be able to, since I had no expectations to speak of (didn't even watch any of the trailers... had already heard that Rey's parents were nobodies, which of course could be backpedaled in the next film if they want), and a pretty open mind as far as characterization. I pretty much accept what's thrown at me, if it can truly be considered canon. Instead of thinking "Luke is so OOC," I'll just see what happens, and if anything feels weird (like the urge to kill his nephew), I try to find a way to justify it, and I usually can. That way, it doesn't piss me off. I kinda do this with fic too, to a point, but since that's not canon, I CAN think "well that's a little too OOC even for me"... I remind myself that everyone has their own opinions on characterization, and only the creators or those directly involved with the canon are ~allowed~ to definitively declare what's true ( ... )
