Summary: Kira is pregnant and she can't help worrying about Rei. Fits with the "doctor" prompt although not intentionally! :)
When Kira found out she was pregnant with twins, she knew it was going to be a problem.
She knew that Rei was scared. She also knew that he wasn’t going to talk to her about it. She couldn’t really expect him to talk to her about it. He found it hard enough thinking about it, of that she was sure. She’d just have to wait until the right moment and at some point, they’d talk.
It was hard though. Being pregnant wasn’t really quite the experience that she’d hoped for. Other women spoke about it being the pinnacle of womanhood, beautiful and empowering. While Kira found it very special to be pregnant and loved the idea of it, she suffered from morning sickness and various aches and pains. Rei did his best to take care of her but she knew that he was worrying and that made it hard.
“They’ll be able to tell me the genders today,” she said quietly. “Do you want to come?”
She didn’t really think that Rei would but to her surprise, he looked incredibly disappointed that he couldn’t.
“I have to train,” he said. “Can’t blow it off. Call me though? The minute you know?”
He sounded pleading and Kira instantly nodded her head. She wondered what he was hoping for. Two girls, maybe? A boy and a girl? Or did he hope for two boys, like him and Sei? Did he have hopes of recreating the past and doing it right? Or did he wish the past was erased entirely? She didn’t know. If only he could have been there and she could have seen his face! She would have known then. She would have been able to read in his eyes what he’d really wanted.
The nurses at the hospital gave her a few vaguely disapproving looks at first until she mentioned that her husband was Rei Kashino and was training today. Then their expressions changed. They didn’t know her of course. She’d taken Rei’s name but she still did her art under her maiden name. It was easier that way. Besides, being an artist wasn’t quite as noticeable as being a motorcycle racer. Rei told her that it was just less flashy and she shouldn’t let it bother her. Kira didn’t. She loved that Rei got cross enough to defend her. That was all that mattered.
The doctor was a cheerful man. He checked her health first, asking if she was worried. Kira told him yes but didn’t give him the real reason why. Too many details. Too many questions. Besides, if the doctor knew Rei Kashino, he knew that Rei had had a twin who had died. Let him draw his own conclusions from that. There was no need to give him anything else.
The gel was cold and rather unpleasant but it was worth it to instantly hear the two healthy-sounding heartbeats. The doctor smiled and continued the scan, pointing out her babies.
“Are they boys? Or girls?” she asked, trying to sound calm, like it wasn’t something that really mattered.
“Well, let’s see,” he said, moving the scanner carefully. “Looks like … that one’s a girl … and that one … another girl! Congratulations! Twin girls!”
“Are they going to be identical?” she whispered.
“No way to tell that yet,” he said, far too cheerful.
Kira barely waited to be cleaned up before she went out to phone Rei. The phone was answered quickly by someone she didn’t know and pretty quickly handed over to Rei. Probably he’d been annoying everyone about it all day.
“Two girls,” she said.
“Brilliant!” came the reply. “You can have one for an artist and I’ll teach the other to be a motorbike rider extraordinaire!”
“You will not!” Kira told him empathetically. “Bad enough that you go out there all the time! You’re not teaching any of our children bad habits!”
Rei just laughed at her and teased her for being a worry-guts and said that when he came home tonight, they would celebrate. Clearly, something had cheered him up. Perhaps it was just the knowledge that they were having two girls. Not another Rei and Sei.
Kira lifted her head up proudly. No matter what happened, her daughters - their daughters - wouldn’t be like Rei and Sei. She and Rei would be together and they would make everything right. They would show their daughters love and happiness and joy and give them the happy family that neither Rei nor she had ever really had.
