Title: Amateur
Fandom: Ayatsuri Sakon
Rating: G
Summary: Sakon and Ukon are confusing to people who don't understand.

Kana was not impressed by the strange boy that was apparently helping solve her friend’s murder.

For a start, she did not really believe that amateurs really ought to be involving themselves in police work. Especially not someone so young. And someone so … clearly peculiar. Perhaps unbalanced.

Not that she would ever dream of saying that to him, of course. That would be rude. And perhaps it was just a quirk. People had strange quirks. Maybe he was just playing it up to try and distract people. Or just for fun. People did that sometimes. Perhaps Sakon-kun was just being a little strange to try and deter everyone. To stop them examining him too closely.

Or maybe he was just a lunatic who thought he knew detection and really thought that his puppet was talking about to him.

He certainly seemed to. He sat with Ukon (“Ukon-sama, dammit!”) on his lap and talked to him, frowning slightly, his eyes narrowed. When Kana came in, Ukon waved at her and said “Hey, pretty lady!” and Sakon murmured “Ukon, don’t be rude.” and nodded at her politely with a little smile. Was it some way of perhaps having his cake and eating it? Being ill-mannered and then well-mannered by turns? It certainly seemed that way, Ukon had been horrible to almost everyone, loud and brash and calling them all idiots. Whereas Sakon was just quiet, good mannered and always apologised for his puppet’s behaviour.

Perhaps he was ill. She pondered that too. Perhaps he really thought that Ukon was talking to him, telling him things. It certainly wasn’t just an act. She naughtily sneaked up to his room and pressed her ear to the door and they were still talking, Ukon informing Sakon that he worried too much and that really, Sakon needed to relax. Sakon then informed Ukon that he was very relaxed, just busy and Ukon snorted. It all suggested someone who was unbalanced. Or maybe just very much like a child? Children often gave themselves instructions through imaginary friends, didn’t they? But Sakon was too old for an imaginary friend …

Well, he wasn’t imaginary, she supposed. Not really. He was a puppet. He was clearly there, everyone could see him. Everyone could hear him. It was only that, as in the case of all imaginary friends, there was some serious doubt as to whether the voice was coming from Ukon or whether it was coming from Sakon.

Perhaps there was a voice. Kana could remember many stories about haunted puppets and possessed dolls. She’d never really believed them but perhaps some of them were true. Perhaps Sakon had a puppet named Ukon that contained a ghostly spirit. Maybe it wasn’t even in the puppet. Maybe Sakon was possessed and had another being living inside him that came out whenever Sakon held a puppet in his hands. It could happen. It seemed unlikely but it could happen … perhaps?

Sakon (and Ukon?) solved the case. They caught the murderer, refused all money and credit and left, Ukon kissing Kana’s little sister goodbye before he went. Sakon sighed and muttered “Ukon, must you?” and Ukon said “You’re just jealous cause none of the girls want to kiss you.”

Kana didn’t think that she would ever really understand. But in the end, she supposed that it didn’t really matter.
