I'll start with a tribute to my Dad by posting a stock photo of his generation. He would not want any personal image of him on the Internet. I didn't tell him that his image is already there, because he has been in the papers...

Best wishes to your Dad! My Dad was deferred because he was a firefighter, and considered part of the "Home Guard".I had several uncles who served. Whenever I meet a man (or woman) in uniform, I always stop and say "Thank you for your service." I lost a cousin in the Vietnam war when his helicopter was shot down.
