The point that it is a complex issue with no clear-cut "no it's always been tolerant/intolerant" is significant. (As far as the other poster, who is now banned, I have to say this: I've been very put off by previous observation in the comm. If it had been anyone else, I would have reacted differently; even so, I do regret being quite so dismissive). Islamic-Jewish relations have long been complex and mixed. In the article, the curator of the Jewish museum points out that he's the curator of the *only* Jewish Museum in an Islamic country, and that struck me as sad. There *is* so much shared heritage -- reading about the long history of the Jewish settlement on Djerba in Tunisia, for example -- it's sad that things have gotten as muddled and ugly as they have.
