This is a bit of a sensitive question, but it's something that I would really like an answer to. I'm sure most of us are aware of the level of extreme Islamaphobia that exists in the west. How can we challange this? I find the level of hatred displayed by some of these so called liberals to be pretty scary. I think the greatest gift I ever recieved was to be born to parents with great moral values who taught me to respect people of all religions, races and beliefs. I was always free from hate. But the culture seems to have shifted. Now if is permissible to claim organized for every evil that has ever afflicted the world, and Muslims in particular for being prone to violence. This is culture of prejudice is not something I want for the future of my country, myself or (God willing) my future children.
In my heart of hearts I cannot believe that Islam is a religion of violence. When people say Muslims cannot be progressive members of democratic societies the way Christians and Jews can, I cringe. When they say Christians and Jews are taught love and forgiveness but Muslims are taught retribution, I despair. When they say the Koran incites violence, I want to cry. What is to be done about this? I am not sufficiently well informed about the Koran/Islamic thought to be able to answer to these kind of statements. So if anyone has any resources they would like to share about how to combat these prejudices or explain what Islam really teaches I would really appreciate it!
Peace :)
