Shethey flowed over buildings and cars and bridges, taking a scrap here, assimilating a pylon there, touchingfeelingtasting the metal of the city. San Francisco.
The creature stopped, suddenly, blond humanoid hair fluttering in the slight breeze and shining in the light of a nearby skyscraper, and Sarah Corvis knew the thing could hear her.
She pulled out a cigarette, cocking her head to the side and lighting it as she sauntered forward toward shethem. The woman was surrounded by little spider-robots that appeared to be made of interconnecting blocks, and they flowed overaroundwith her as she moved forward gracefully like a well-oiled machine.
Sarah twitched and pulled a long drag of smoke deep into her nanite-ridden lungs, blinking as her eye inputs flickered to life, scanning the being.
"Two bionic legs, two bionic arms. A bionic chest - good to see they've implemented that - and...oooh, a bionic skull. That's new," she drawled. "Jamie wasn't good enough for the Lab, they had to make a third bionic woman, too? And bionic spiders as pets. That's just a little creepy. I'm going to have to talk to them about that."
The blond woman paused, within earshot of Sarah, and Sarah just grinned, puffing away. The woman smiled eerily. "I am no human. My name is Samantha Carter. I am a human-form Replicator, made of nanites. These are my brethren. Fifth is trapped in a far galaxy, and...instead of waiting any longer, we have come here to...take....Earth." Sarah watched, flicking her cigarette away as the womanthing transformed her arm into a long, metal knife. "If you like, you can be the first to die."
"Not planning on that, actually." Sarah grinned maniacally and watched as the Replicator launched itself at her, at a speed that she'd only ever seen one other woman master. Brilliant., she thought, right before the woman swung her left arm-blade in a glittering, high arc, slicing directly through Sarah's shoulder. The Replicator smiled again, a smile that didn't reach her chilly eyes - a smile that quickly faded as Sarah's shoulder repared itself hastily. Sarah grinned.
"You're not the only one with nanites, y'know. We can use 'em here, too."
"The United States Air Force database in Cheyenne Mountain said nothing of this!" the Replicator Carter snapped, eyes narrowing. Sarah raised an eyebrow - this chick was with the Air Force? They dealt with aliens?
The Replicator seemed to falter, hesitant, as she seemingly conferred with her arachnid companions - Sarah narrowed her eyes as she watched the transfer of commnications back and forth, traceable as narrow streams of light. The human-form Replicator Carter sneered at her before stepping back into a beam of light, seemingly sent at random from space.
"We shall return, human."
Sarah watched as the Replicators were transported away, then shook her head, thinking about the words the Replicator Carter had spoken. Seems the military even had secrets from itself, she mused. But, Cheyenne Mountain was only a few hundred miles away. It would only be a few hours, and she could find out everything.
She took off into the rising sun, running, a hundred-mile-an-hour blur.
