I love that quote, and I agree that Waters is far more appealing as a speaker than a filmmaker. I heard him at a librarian conference once, and he was excellent.
To be fair, I only saw one of his movies. But that was when I was a teenager and very eager to watch something shocking and confrontational. Even then, I found myself pinging on second-hand embarrassment.
And one of my favorite songwriters has a beautiful song about one of John Water's protégées.
Maybe I'm just not very good at appreciating camp.
I love John Waters' movies. On "A Dirty Shame" the DVD extra has a wonderful interview with him. For that interview alone the DVD is worth renting; it helps that the movie is pretty hilarious too.
I still haven't seen any of his films! (Female Trouble is supposed to be a good one and it's on Youtube, if you're interested.)
I saw him on The Story of Queer Cinema doc the other night and he seemed great. He dislikes whiny people and recommends kicking ass instead of sitting around complaining. <3
Maybe books will be cool again soon! Music and cinema is all pretty crappy currently so perhaps people will get bored and turn to books instead.
You know, I'd hope that too, but judging by the books that get popular, eh. Though The Hunger Games is infinitely better than Twilight, I guess. CYNIC4EVA.
