Perhaps your jobsworth was just really aware of fire worries and regulations... It does seem odd that there's no ventilation in the kitchen to start with though, and that's not considered a health and safety issue... More expensive to put right, mind you, so maybe they've carefully decided not to examine the situation too closely...

Well done you for being practical and getting something useful done, though! I'm constantly surprised at how few people ever bother to do something to fix a situation, and leave it to someone else instead... Or even look behind them when they leave, say, the toilet... *headdesk*

The layers of bureaucracy you describe are quite alarming.

Sounds like there is more fire risk from overheating with the door kept shut. Would they let you have watercooler somewhere else in the office, not in the kitchen?
