2009 Stories 75-79

I thought I posted reviews of these first two stories a few days back.  Either I posted to the wrong community, or I'm imagining things.  Both are equally possible.

75. Salvation by Lawrence Person (you can find it at www.revolutionsf.com/fiction/salvation/01.html)  Very short piece that is hard to describe without giving the whole thing away.  ( Read more... )

One of these days I'm going to get the first Harry Dresden book out of the library and see what it's like. So many people seem to love them and they sound like my kind of thing. And these short stories sound like fun.

I delayed reading the Dresden books for a long time, despite how enthusiastically my buddy Jim was recommending them. Then again, I also delayed reading the Harry Potter books until mid-way through the series for the same reason -- too much hype initially turns me off to things. Now, I am very very glad I'm reading them. He's just such a fun character. I have the novelette (is that really a literary term? Subterranean Press uses it all the time) "Backup" still to read, and the latest hardcover, "Turn Coat," which I'm planning on reading on my trip to Houston Weds-Fri of next week.

I'm really bad at delaying reading stuff. Part of it is time - you simply can't read everything and I already have so many series on the go (18 at the last count) and do not need to start more. But part is also, I think, a sort of stubborn resistance to reading popular books. Which is quite stupid as I nearly always like the books when I eventually get to them. Oddly enough I didn't read Harry Potter until the first four books were out too. Same for Terry Pratchett - he had about 30 out before I got to him. And I really must get to the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik as even my daughter is reading those now. I will certainly read the Harry Dresden books though because, being contrary in the extreme, I also hate to miss out on good books.

We're very much on the same page, then. I have several other series that I'm in the midst of reading, most of which I have purchased all the installments of but just have not gotten around to coming up to date on. And then there are the series that have been recommended that I haven't even come close to starting yet. And all of the non-series stuff I want to read, and the authors I follow regularly ...

I need more time to read. Time to quit my job. *grin*
