Dolls didn’t smile. They didn’t have to. They were perfect. That’s why it was so unsettling to see the lips curve upwards, to see the steady eyes crinkle slightly. That’s why it was spellbinding. It shouldn’t be happening. But for once, he had said the right thing at the right time. There had been no one to scoff or make fun of him, or her.
The words had fallen off his tongue before he had a chance to reconsider. Those unsettling red eyes had met his and there had been a heartbeat or five, suspended and frozen under the moon. Then she smiled and he felt weak with relief and flushed with success that he had done it right for once.
Rei ducked her head and brushed her hair behind her ear. It was another too-human gesture. She could’ve been any girl for that moment. He had no idea what to say next, but instinct told him that it was all right. Nothing else needed to be said. It was enough to be there, and to smile back.
