Title: Pandora
Day/Theme: 12. wishes sealed in a box
Series: The Village
Character/Pairing: Ivy
Rating: I could not think of anything for this one! It was one of the last ones I wrote because it took that long to come up with an idea.

She had once heard someone whisper that sins were just wishes for the wrong thing. Ivy knew as well as the other children that their parents kept their sins in boxes. She couldn’t imagine ever opening one to find out. She was old enough to know that there weren’t real sins in there to fly out and escape like Pandora’s box. She understood they were just symbols to be meditated and prayed on so that the real sins could be overcome. When she tried to imagine what her parents might have wished for that was so wrong it had to be sealed away her mind sputtered to a halt.

She knew the seven deadly sins, and knew that were many smaller ones. She knew the things that she herself would be ashamed to say before her neighbors, but she was honest enough that her secrets were not damning ones. She hoped. She knew what she wished for and wondered what would have to go wrong for them to become sins.

Her sister had once dared her to open their parents’ box. “You are blind!” Kitty had said. “You would not see anything!”

“All the more reason not to look,” Ivy had said primly and Kitty had hugged her, laughing. She would only have been shocked if Ivy had agreed.

When she and Lucius were married, would they have a box? It seemed right that a husband and wife should share sins and stand together against them, but no one but the Elders used them. If it really was a tradition why weren’t the boxes given as wedding gifts? Kitty and Christop didn’t have one in their new house. Perhaps it was for the best if the sins were never locked away. Perhaps then, they could remain wishes.
