John was busy and his mind had wandered. He tinkered and typed and he remembered passing messages with Tim. Their hacking had been child’s play back then, and they had thought themselves very clever with all their secrets and secret codes. He still remembered some of them.
“Hotegometege, hotegometege otegon thetege rategangetege,” he sang softly to himself.
“What?” his mother asked.
“I forgot you didn’t like that one,” he said, grinning a little. “I know! Twiteginkletege, twiteginkletege, litegittletege stateger…”
Cameron was now studying him carefully too.
“Has he had any head traumas I haven’t been told about?” Sarah groused to her. Cameron shook her head, and John could practically hear her processing his voice patterns.
“It’s a code,” he said finally. He had learned it in no time, and Tim had been better at writing it than speaking it, but they had driven their teachers crazy with it. She was still intent on him. “Atega cotegodetage.” He pronounced it slowly. Cameron blinked and then straightened up. That hadn’t taken long.
“Itegi geteget itegit,” she said, and went back to her own task.
