The boy stood silently at attention. He wore a faintly irritated expression on his masked face as he surveyed the ratty office.
“Ah, Kakashi,” said a jovial man, cheeks red from an exuberant sip of wine.
Kakashi said nothing.
“Well, it’s come to my attention that you’ve been rather, hm, how should I put it, hard to communicate with?”
When the other participant of this dubious conversation again said nothing, the man sighed.
“Fine, I’ll just say it: you’re antisocial. Dangerously so. And yes, well, I understand that this is ANBU, but as much as we expect our operatives to maintain a high level of privacy and aloofness, we also demand willingness to bond with one’s teammates and be, well, if not friendly, at least sociable.”
Kakashi stared at him in utter incomprehension.
“What you’re describing is an insane person,” Kakashi finally said.
The man sighed again, but this time in relief. He had thought the boy would walk out the door.
“My dear child,” the man said with a brilliant smile, ignoring the twitch of Kakashi’s mask. “Didn’t you read the manual when you joined us?”
