Ino has never been considered to be a great kunoichi. Competent, at best. It’s true that she has a certain wily streak, but that’s usually attributed to her favored jutsu. And her looks? Too flashy, it’s muttered. Ino responds to these comments with her typical attitude-kunoichi are supposed to tempt the enemy with their charm, so who has the right to draw the line at Ino’s beauty and call it too much?

Well, maybe she isn’t being quite fair. After all, it isn’t just Ino’s pretty face that’s drawing undue attention. It’s the way she dresses (edgy, modern), the way she parts her hair (a sweep over one eye, grown long); everything’s just so sharp and bright about her.

She contemplates this one shiny, sunny day (despite what’s said, Ino isn’t incapable of a philosophical thought now and then), and wonders what it would take for her to be great. Sakura, she thinks with a pang of anxiety and jealousy all rolled into one, is already stomping and punching her way there. Temari, perhaps the only girl that riles indignation in Ino and causes her to feel intimidated at the same time, is already great enough to warrant the eternally bored Shikamaru’s attention with every visit.

Eventually, Ino arrives at the conclusion that it would take a dark (to mask her sheer prettiness) and stormy (to dampen her glow and drown out her voice) night.

It’s too bad there aren’t many of those in the Fire Country.
