Since the dawn of time, the king stood his ground over the checkered floor. At a single movement, he could command walls to crumble and people to hail his greatness. The power of everything above and beyond belonged to him and only him. His control was eternal. He was perfectly untouchable… or so he thought.

Suoh Tamaki learned late in life that none of this could ever be true.

As a boy in France, he’d been told countless times not to touch the glass chessboard, which sat in the foyer of his former home. He fiddled with the shimmering pieces, mainly with the ruler of the board. He admired it, sometimes taking it in his pocket.

Several mentors had taught him the fundamentals of the game, describing how the king’s horses rode across the board. They only existed to protect the king, to be captured for his sake. And though the king, in theory, did have the ultimate reign, he could not do anything to help his horses. The king existed only to stand idle.

Tamaki hated that most of all.

When arriving at Ouran Academy, Tamaki built a kingdom from the ground up. He sought an escape from all expectation (disguised as boredom) and, in turn, sought others who were like him.

Hunny escaped from growing up, loving bunnies and cake more than majority of school children. Mori escaped from everything, only concentrating on what he found to be important. Hikaru and Kaoru are still escaping the world; a world they condemned themselves to. Kyouya escaped his family’s lowered expectation, trying harder and harder to shine beyond the darkness he was pushed into as the third child.

The escape route Tamaki had built his kingdom on seemed less and less real. Sooner or later, the two seniors, Mori and Hunny, would eventually leave their midst. It was also likewise for Kyouya and Tamaki himself.

As much as possible, Tamaki wanted to save his horses from what they had come to escape in the remaining time they had together. He would not stand idle, like a chess board king.

He had created his own kingdom, his own world and his own wonderland.

It was one thing nobody could take from him.

But on several occasions, he wondered when it would end. More than that, he wondered what would happen to his horses when this time would arrive.

On the chess board, it was well planned. Once the pawns were taken, they were taken. Nobody would care anymore. When the knights, rooks, and bishops were captured, it was the okay. No big deal. The game would go on. But if the king was captured, the wonderland would cease to exist.

Tamaki hoped, more than anything that somebody would come to save his men, if he could not.

Namely, the queen… Haruhi

Just as it was mentioned, Suoh Tamaki always loved to fiddle with the glass pieces of the foyer. He would always steal his favorite piece... the queen, for she was the savior of all the king’s horses and, admittedly, the king himself.

End ♥
