Shikamaru was once again getting more than he had bargained for.

It wasn’t that Temari was particularly unpredictable-she was, after all, a girl, and to Shikamaru, all girls reacted in the same way. Their eyes glittered when they were angry, they bit their lip when they were upset, and they tended to hold very long grudges without ever informing you of what you had done to tick them off. The only difference between girls was the degree to which they performed these actions.

For instance, when Temari was angry, her eyes burned a hole through him; when she was upset, her mouth flattened into a line harsher than his mother’s voice; and when she held a grudge, she ignored him for months on end, interrupted only by a marked sneer when forced to associate with him.

In fact, Shikamaru considered, such reactions might constitute as being wholly different from the norm. Unfortunately for him, this meant that he lacked a solution to the current situation. The most recent attempt at reconciliation had resulted in his scroll of faintly irritated endearment being “mistakenly” delivered to the brother of its intended recipient. The younger one. (It had been a mess to clean up, especially since the name of its intended recipient had not been written anywhere in the letter, leading the Kazekage to believe that Shikamaru was in love with him.)

“How about you buy her a bouquet?” Ino was suggesting to a knot of upright hair.

She leaned forward, an intrigued look on her face as she prodded the hair, one elbow propped up on the counter and chin resting on a curled palm.

“I don’t know how she’d react; she’s as unpredictable as that dratted wind of hers,” Shikamaru muttered in reply, face in his hands.

Ino laughed and pointed to a brightly colored bunch on the windowsill. “Tell you what; I’ll let you buy those at a discount, and after you have them sent, let me know how it goes.”

Shikamaru groaned. “Ino . . .”

“There’re only so many directions a wind can blow,” she said sagely.

The next day, Shikamaru awoke to find himself lying in a bed strewn with petals. A familiar face crowded his vision, canines bared.

“Did you think you could buy me with flowers?” Temari asked, voice low and dangerous.

Shikamaru closed his eyes and wished for the world to end.
