Her eyes were the grey of the sea, but they called to his mind not the sea, but the lands that lay to the east, the lands where the Dark Tower still stood, the lands were death and mortal fear still reigned. He looked into her eyes, and what he saw was meant to chill him, push him away with cold hands, frozen blue: she did not welcome the pity she saw in his own eyes.

Her eyes would rather look eastward: to Aragorn, or so she seemed to think. But Faramir was raised in the wisdom of Mithrandir, and he thought he understood her sorrow, more than she herself comprehended.

Her eyes looked eastward to death, to the oblivion the darkness would bring, rather than being caged in a life that was without use, and without glory nor renown. In his heart he felt for her a great pity, for he saw no hope in the grey sea of her eyes.

But as they stood together in silence, waiting for the stroke of doom, she felt her draw closer to him. He thought then that he saw something else in her eyes, something other than a bitter longing for death: it was fear. A fear, at last, of death, and a longing for life.

His heart felt easier, seeing this. For in his heart he held not just a great pity for the Lady Eowyn, but also a great love: greater perhaps, than the love she had for herself. And while death for all of them was still uncertain, he wished-sorely- to see hope shine once more in her eyes.
