He had met his match, been tempted and trapped, and defeated. He had expected the end. In a way, he had gotten it.
It had been the end of him, as he had been, just as it had been the end of what he had been before when he became a vampire. This time, as before, he was changed, chained, granted new power, given new restrictions. Wards and spells and symbols and words of power embroidered in his gloves, cut into his flesh, swirling in his blood, probably etched into his very bones.
He had come to relish the new responsibilities, savor the new pains, just as he had the last time his life had been take from him . He enjoyed being bound in Hellsing’s service as much as he had enjoyed running amuck with undead power when he had first changed. Caterpillars probably didn’t regret lose their leaf-eating crawliness when their wings came in. Neither did he.
