She stretched her hand out, crying out in alarm as his eyes met with hers, "Grab on!"
There was a split second in which his hand actually began to lift up, to take hold of her own, to pull himself up and out of safety. Then that moment was gone and his hand instead held the prize of the night and was flinging it in her direction. She would have been too shocked to catch it if it hadn't been for that heartbeat between those two seconds of time. The beat in which his eyes shut themselves against her, closing off the only means that she had to see what it was he was thinking, feeling.
Poker Face had descended upon his face just before he threw away his one true target, just before he was taken from behind without warning, just before tears began to fill her eyes as she tried to keep herself from crying out and giving away her location any more than she already had, just before she went diving to catch that gem. She tried to tune out the scuffle from below, tried not to acknowledge that something worse than that summer would happen, and caught hold of the heist.
It felt strangely warm, but then again it could have been because Kid had had it hidden away on himself before he'd produced it in his hand.
It could have been the bit of warmth that Kaito had given it while running from these people who had finally managed to catch him.
There was nothing Aoko could do at that point except run.
She hated herself for running, for knowing exactly what he would have said if she told him how much she hated it. It was all for the best. The gem had to get away safely. It was those people's true objective even if what they believed to be true was false.
And besides, she could almost hear him saying, almost able to see the smile on his face and the shrug in his shoulders, other people's lives are more important than some stupid vendetta.
She wanted to hit him for not ever saying such things but for at least thinking them. He deserved the punishment when she saw him again. Because she would see him again. She had to see him again. If she didn't... Aoko couldn't imagine such a thing. It was one thing if there was a possibility of losing just Kid to his insane agenda, but once she found that Kid was Kaito and Kaito was Kid and if she lost one she lost the other...
Aoko never recognized her surroundings until she ran squarely into a firm body and began to struggle and shout and cry when hands grabbed onto her. It was only when she heard the thief's name that she was able to calm down enough to realize that it was a lieutenant on the Kid Taskforce that had accosted her. It was only then that she truly realized just how far she had run and what exactly she was holding in her hand. The officer noticed as well and for a moment, the two of them stared dumbly at the gem before the man sat her down inside of a police car while he went running, shouting for the inspector.
The girl could only sit there, staring at the strange prize sought by so many people while tears ran freely down her cheeks and she hoped and prayed and pleaded with whatever deity would listen that he would come out of all of this unscathed.
Or at the very least, alive.
