It irritated Smoker, deeply and profoundly, that some people were apparently born to be pirates.

For a start, they'd have made damn good marines. He could imagine it now. All right, so Straw Hat Luffy would be the type of captain who needed several competent people around him to keep him pointed in the right direction, but it wasn't as if the Marines were short of those anyhow. Competent people, or captains like that. With a swordsman like Roronoa Zoro (he could imagine them in uniform now, and just think how happy it'd make Tashigi to have someone else around she could polish her swords with), and a navigator like that Nami girl, and a ship's engineer like the Usopp boy, and hell, the Sanji kid would probably go through the ranks like a dose of salt . . .

And instead there they go, racketing off across the oceans in an irresponsible way, doing whatever the hell they liked, destabilising governments, kicking Crocodile's ass -- okay, he wasn't objecting to the Crocodile business, that was the sort of thing he liked to see a nice enterprising young kid doing -- and beating up on other Marines who got in their way.

They didn't even seem to realise they were doing anything wrong.

He bit through his cigar. Pulled out a new one. Lit it. Took a long pull.

One of these days, perhaps, they'd come to their senses. Shape up. Do something that'd pay off their bounties. It wasn't as if other pirates hadn't done the same thing. Join up with the Marines. Kick ass in the name of courage, duty, and defence.

It was a nice dream.

In the meantime, he had to kick their asses. He hoped some day they'd appreciate the pedal action.

But really, he reflected as the fresh tobacco soothed his nerves, some people were just born to be pirates.
