Sweltering hot days were standard fare on summers-today’s rare day-off from the rigorous schedule of a full college load was no exception. So after hours of splashing and horsing around in seawater, Risa was giddy at finding a straw hammock hanging obliquely between two palm trees. It was old but sturdy, and the tall girl barely mustered any resistance before slumping into it and eventually dozing off.
The fingerings of the late afternoon sun roused her sometime later. She awoke to a certain someone’s face close by and promptly blushed.
“Hey,” he said, not seeming to notice.
“Hey,” she said back. “Sorry, I fell asleep.”
“You should be.” Otani was looking towards the sanguine ocean. “I’ve been dying for ice cream for hours, you know.”
Risa lowered her eyes bashfully. “Watching me sleep?”
“The beach, actually.”
“Guarding me from insects?”
“Falling coconuts.” He shrugged languidly. “It’ll be troublesome, lugging your humongous carcass back to your parents’ house.”
Risa merely smiled, cheeks matching the rosiness of the sky. “I recognized the hammock from the pics your mom showed me,” she said casually. “You were five and sunburned.”
“Shut up.”
“Thanks, Otani, really. I needed to relax after those remedial exams.”
