He remembered how the old folks said that in the old days the ancients had believed that the sun was God. When the sun went away, the earth was up for grabs. So the night was for demons and monsters. They tried to conquer the world in darkness, but were always sent packing when the sun rose again. And it always did.
Even when it was gone for a whole season, like here in Barrow. It certainly felt like God had turned His back on them. They were hiding in an old furnace, trying to keep quiet, trying not to starve, or freeze, or do anything that would alert the monsters that there were still a few humans left alive in town.
Life in Barrow had taught them all patience. You either learned to wait or lost your mind there. You had to wait for groceries and mail, you had to sit for hours on a plane to get anywhere. You had to wait week upon week for the sun to come back and for months after for the snow to melt. That patience served the survivors here, too.
The sun would come back. It was coming, as slowly but relentlessly as time and tide. All they had to do was stay alive until then. Tomorrow would come. The sun would rise. God would see them again and drive the monsters back into hiding. The black and blue world of the arctic night would become white and shining as a blade. They just had to make it that long.
