She kept busy. She worked hard. She did her best to only remember the good things. She kept her mind too occupied to listen to the whispers of the night. She was grateful at how well she slept. It was this time of year, though, that it was hardest.
The last sunset had been yesterday. Once upon a time, she had had a husband who had sat with her to watch it. Then the month of darkness came and with it, the monsters. He had saved them, but he had died. He was gone. She was alone. Mostly.
She had watched the last glimmer of sunlight yesterday, and cried for a bit. There had been no sun today. There wouldn’t be for some time. When she turned off her lamp, true dark settled over her. She wasn’t really afraid the monsters would be back. Well, that wasn’t entirely true. She would have to face them alone this time if they did. And it was in those few exhausted minutes after the lights went out that she missed him the most.
