The other comment threads on the internet aren't doing it for me. This episode is an important one in the shipper lexicon and I want to hear what this community has to say about it.
Personally, I loved it, and it has actually revived my respect and fondness for the show as it ends, which feels good. It's the kind of character-relationship depth and "realness" I've been having to imagine into the show for the past few years. And I thought it was totally appropriate.
I loved the stuff they fought about (exactly what they would object to about each other, none of this "you're ugly and nerdier than me" nonsense) -- and I loved bringing up that Colleen wanted them together (YES SHE DID), and I love that it actually wasn't resolved with warm, comfortable affirmations that would have been the real death of their UST, in a way. It's off the table, but in an unresolved kind of way?
I HAVE to take the Jenna thing as a joke, because I COULD NOT ACCEPT that it's for real, and Liz's non-reaction sort of backs up my interpretation (though I suppose both are valid). Liz would freak OUT if that had happened and he'd kept it from her for so long.
I've watched that scene maybe 5 times now, and there is definitely a Liz reaction to the Jenna thing.
There's a fic in here somewhere. There's no real reason for her to be upset by such a meaningless fling, and it's be interesting for her to interrogate that a bit.
not a reaction proportionate to that reveal, though. I think she would be upset -- she even flinches when he talks about having sex with his girlfriends, but her longtime best friend and the volatile/crazy actress on their show and a totally insane person you would not want your best male friend to have sex with? nooooo way would she not be upset by that. Plus the idea that it happened four years ago and he never told her?? Unforgivable. The idea of Jack having sex (repeatedly!) with such an obvious walking disaster as Jenna (after the Jennifer Aniston episode, and after he got on Liz's case for "unprofessionally"making out with Danny) -- if Liz took that as a serious admission, it would have derailed the whole conversation. they CAN'T mean it seriously, and if the writers intended to, then they made such a major character misstep that I reject it out of hand! lol
Except, she thinks that he is a bit of "slut" and Liz knows Jenna has a lot of sex as well, so I don't think she would be all that put off by it. Who knows, maybe she even suspected it?
In the context of the scene, I don't see why Liz would be really angry about Jack not telling her something like that. It was awhile ago, as was the whole thing with Danny. Maybe if she found out when it was happening or when he was hypocritically criticizing her for making out with Danny, then she might be upset. But, I personally don't see him not telling her as being particularly unforgivable... People have secrets, and someone who's in her 40's would probably be well aware of that. She could be put off, but there was nothing there to attack him for.
Yeah, the issue with Claire was that she would become obsessed with him. Jenna is clearly able to handle the idea of meaningless sex.
I agree that it somewhat contradicts his stated philosophy in "Black Light Attack" (though Jenna is not his immediate subordinate) but that episode clearly had a lot going on beneath the surface, and his rule was plainly just a pretext.
Liz would certainly find it gross, and in S3 may have thought of Jack as "hers" in some way, but at this stage in the game there's just no reason for her to lose her mind about this.
