She always wants him to say things, like Nii-sama brings girls home or Gozaburo hit them or something. He’s not really sure what she wants, and he knows that if he asks, she’ll just give a sad little smile and say she doesn’t want anything, except for him to get better.
It’s a lie, though; he’s dealt with her kind before, the falsely sympathetic paparazzi from the tabloids, always far too ready to put an arm around his shoulder, who think that just because he’s young, he’s dumb enough to tell his and Nii-sama’s business to the world.
“You’ve been with the Mazakis for a little over a month,” she says, by way of this week’s greeting.
“Yes,” he says.
“We haven’t really talked about that.”
No, he thinks. We haven’t. And he doesn’t want to talk about; he’d rather talk about the time he’d watched Gozaburo casually backhand Nii-sama for mouthing off. Rather talk about anything. Any secret, so long as he doesn’t have to talk about living at the Mazakis, with Nii-sama just next store.
Mokuba used to try and defend his brother’s actions. Explain them to people who didn’t understand. He thinks back to what he told Amelda (was it really only four months ago?) that Kaiba Corporation’s change in direction was to be his brother’s redemption. And even though Nii-sama had told him to stop, had shaken his head, Mokuba had known that Nii-sama was happy that Mokuba - at least - understood him.
Mokuba understands Nii-sama better than anyone, and that is the problem. He knows that this time, Nii-sama is completely out of control.
