Summary: Things change after their father dies.
“Get some ice, would you,” Nii-sama says to him.
Up until a few weeks ago, it was their father who had said that to Nii-sama. Mokuba can’t remember a night in his life when their father didn’t hold out his empty glass and say those words. Nii-sama would get up from his spot in front of the television and go into the kitchen, coming back with a freshened glass. And when Mokuba was old enough to toddle along after his brother, he used to watch Nii-sama clink ice-cubes from the refrigerator into their father’s glass. Then watch Nii-sama carefully pour more of that amber liquid that their father liked so much (and that Nii-sama let him taste on occasion) over the ice.
Of course, their father had always said it in English, and when Seto had returned to the living room, their father had drawn Seto and Mokuba both up on his knees, and snug in their father’s arms, Mokuba had watched television until bedtime.
Nii-sama is saying it now in Japanese, and there is no glass for Mokuba to take. There is only the cut on Nii-sama’s cheek, the black of the bruise spreading up under his eye.
Mokuba doesn’t trust himself to speak, just nods, and heads off towards the kitchen.
