Shuichi flipped on the kitchen light and nearly had a heart attack when he saw Eiri Yuki sitting at the table, calmly drinking from a cup of tea.
“Yuki!” He gasped, hand going to his pounding heart. “What are you doing?”
“…Drinking tea.”
“In the dark?”
Eiri took a sip, eyes looking over the cup in the singer’s general direction. “It doesn’t make much of a difference to me.”
“Oh. Right.” Shuichi dropped his hand and looked at the floor. He forgot, sometimes, and he wasn’t really used to thinking before opening his mouth. “You-you scared me. I heard noises and I thought we were being robbed or something!”
“You didn’t go for the bat again, did you?”
“Uh-” Shuichi glanced at the long, wooden object in his other hand. “-No.” He was pretty sure K-san was still holding a grudge from being whacked on the head that one time; but, really, the guy should learn to knock. “Are you okay, Yuki?”
“I’m swell.” Eiri’s unseeing gaze left him and the writer’s knuckles whitened slightly as he gripped his cup. “Why?”
“It’s midnight and you’re drinking tea,” Shuichi said, quietly setting down the bat and going to stand behind the writer, holding him loosely around the shoulders and resting his chin on Eiri’s head. “You’re gonna have a hard time getting to sleep.”
“Hn.” Eiri didn’t shrug him off, although Shuichi imagined he probably wanted to, since he usually did. “Maybe I just don’t feel like sleeping.”
Shuichi frowned faintly and lifted a hand to pet at his beau’s blond hair. He hated how withdrawn Eiri was, how he just closed himself off from everything and everyone. It made consoling him an impossible task. But, anyway, he tried. He always tried.
“Do you want me to stay awake with you?”
Shuichi chewed on his bottom lip and watched as Eiri stilled with his cup halfway to his lips. Offering companionship wasn’t always the best approach with him, but sometimes…
“Do what you want.”
But sometimes Eiri surprised him.
Shuichi smiled and dipped his head down to brush a kiss against Eiri’s cheek before releasing the writer so he could make his own cup of tea.
