Peyton smiles at the girl sleeping in the bed beside her. Their legs are scissored together, their friendship is renewed, and Peyton finds that she’s happier than she has been in quite a while. She likes this much better than she likes Lucas, she decides.
“Who needs him?” Brooke said before she slipped off into slumber. “Give me five minutes and I could find a dozen guys just like him. But where would I get another P. Sawyer?”
Peyton kissed her, then-maybe because she did miss some things about Lucas, and Nathan, too, in a sense-but she managed to play it off as something friendly and normal, and judging by the way Brooke smiled at her, she hadn’t minded.
Peyton pulls her closer and chuckles when she mumbles in her sleep, and sighs contentedly. Yes, this is how it’s meant to be. The two of them, entwined together, not separated and fighting over some silly boy.
And Peyton, and she feels the sweetness of sleep tugging at her, promises to herself that they will never, ever be that way again, and they will always, always, be just like this.
