“Peyton,” Brooke says, her voice slurred from the alcohol that sloshes around in her red, plastic cup. “You are so…smart.”
Peyton looks away from the beach house behind them; Nathan was calling her earlier, and now he’s stopped, and that can only mean he’s found some other girl to distract him and stroke his-ego. And, well, that’s all right, for now. She’s got this beach and this moonlight and this drunken best friend leaning against her shoulder.
“Thank you?” She’s not sure if she’s being complimented or not; it’s hard to tell sometimes, with Brooke.
“You make me feel so dumb.”
“What?” Peyton looks at her, brow knit. “Brooke, you are not dumb!”
“Oh?” She arches an eyebrow and thrusts her cup into the air like she’s made some kind of point. “You know all this-stuff-about music and art…and your read books. I don’t know about any of that-stuff.”
“Brooke, you don’t need that stuff,” Peyton almost-laughs. “You’ve never needed that stuff.”
“I know,” she says, taking a sip of her drink. “Not with boys, I know. But sometimes I think that if I was smarter, you’d like me more. Like boys do.”
Oh, this is not a conversation Peyton wants to have. Not with this beach and this moonlight. And not with Brooke. Never with Brooke, drunk or not.
“Don’t be silly,” she stalls, slipping an arm around the other girl, trying to think of some way to be honest, but not too honest. “I-like you more than I like anyone else, Brooke Davis. Just as you are.”
“Aw, Peyton.” Brooke looks at her, smiling like she’s just won over the entire world. And she throws her arms around Peyton, laughing when her drink spills, and Peyton laughs, too, a bit relieved that she’s dodged that bullet, and more-than-a-bit relieved that Brooke is drunk and probably want remember this, anyway.
