“P. Sawyer,” she says with a bit of smile.
“I didn’t call,” Peyton says, tugging at the cuff of her denim jacket. “Sorry.”
“The only thing you should be apologizing for is that you haven’t hugged me yet,” Brooke mock-scolds, opening her arms. Peyton steps sedately into her embrace, sliding her own arms around her, fingers gently gripping the back of Brooke’s dress. Brooke smiles and holds the girl close; it’s been so long since they’ve been like this. But her smile fades when she feels Peyton shuddering, Peyton’s shoulders shaking underneath her arms. Oh, yes. She’s almost forgotten that this isn’t a happy visit. But she isn’t supposed to know what’s wrong. “Peyton? What’s hurting you, girl?”
“It’s nothing,” Peyton cries. “It’s just-I’m so confused. I don’t know what I want. I don’t know if-if what I have is good, or if I’ve let everything good get away from me.”
Brooke struggles to swallow the lump in her throat. She understands. She understands all too well.
And it kills her to know that Peyton is talking about Lucas Scott.
“You’ve got all you want here, Brooke,” she continues, mumbling into Brooke’s shoulder. “All you’ve ever wanted. You must be so happy.”
Brooke holds the other girl closer, unable to keep tears of her own at bay, unable to keep the dam she’s built up for years from crumbling down in seconds.
“I’m not happy, Peyton,” she nearly sobs. “I’m not. I haven’t been happy since the moment we left Tree Hill. Since-since we left each other.”
She can’t believe she’s said it. She’s finally said it.
“Oh, Brooke,” Peyton sighs heavily and sniffles, and Brooke’s heart quivers. “I’ve missed you, too.”
And Brooke knows she doesn’t get it, but she won’t correct her. Not now. Maybe not ever.
She’ll just hold her like this until she stops crying, no matter how long it takes.
