Shuichi thinks he may have listened to this song over a hundred times by now.
It’s almost two in the morning and he’s listened to every variation of “Rage Beat” that he possibly can. He’s heard the recording with just his vocals, with just Hiro’s guitar, with just Fujisaki’s synthesizer (which he admits is good, aloud, because no one is around to hear him say it). He’s listened to it backwards. He’s sung along, he’s danced around the studio, he’s jammed out to it on air instruments. He’s pretended to be an audience of fangirls, declaring love for himself in Japanese, English, fumbling French, stumbling Spanish, and some jarring gibberish that he imagines sounds a bit like German.
Now he’s lying on the studio floor with his eyes closed and the music rolling over him like waves. He can’t believe all this is really happening. A song recorded-his song; Bad Luck’s first single. Bad Luck. Bad Luck actually exists as something more than him and Hiro fooling around in their bedrooms (in the non-dirty sense, despite what Maiko and his parents might think) and goofing off in front of their classmates. He’s met Ryuichi Sakuma; he’s sung with Ryuichi Sakuma; he’s had his arm around Ryuichi Sakuma and Ryuichi Sakuma’s arm around him.
They’ve got gigs booked. Gigs. K-san told them to expect learning some choreography for a music video. They’ve had photo shoots for more than one magazine and fan mail sent to the studio for them.
It’s all really happening.
He’s lying there in a dark, empty room, listening to it happen.
He’s so full of happiness he could choke on it.
His breath hitches and he presses the heels of his palms against his eyes. He cries softly until the song ends, grinning through the tears. It’s an amazing feeling, having all his dreams come true.
All of them.
It’s half-past two when he leaves the studio, smiling when he sees his Tall, Blond, & Handsome leaning against the hallway wall, sleepily smoking a cigarette. Eiri looks up at him with a glare that’s softened by exhaustion and asks, “Are you finally done?”
“Nope,” Shuichi says, skipping over to him and linking their arms, leading his beau to the elevators. “I’m just getting started.”
