One Tree Hill, Brooke Davis x Peyton Sawyer, “So Close They Can Both Taste It”
Each night, when she sleeps, she dreams of Lucas Scott. She dreams of Lucas Scott holding her, Lucas Scott kissing her, Lucas Scott smiling into her chest, Lucas Scott laughing into her hair. Lucas Scott lying beside her and holding her hand and telling her that she’s wonderful, that she’s so close to her dreams right now that they both can taste it.
But when she wakes up, the body next to hers is Brooke Davis.
“Good morning,” Brooke purrs, stretching her arms up over her head, bringing them back down as she curls on her side. She smiles with her eyes half-lidded and Peyton feels her traitorous heart flip a little. And Brooke Davis is the one to reach out and hold her, draping an arm loosely across Peyton’s breasts and then giving a firm squeeze. Peyton yelps and Brooke laughs softly, sidling closer. “You’re so jumpy, P. Sawyer.”
“Sorry,” she says, lips tugging uneasily into a smile. “I guess I’m nervous about work.”
Brooke rolls her eyes fondly. “I don’t see why you worry so much. You’ve got to be the prettiest intern there.”
“Oddly, that’s not enough to reassure me,” Peyton deadpans in mock-seriousness and Brooke gives her a look. “It’s intimidating there, Brooke. All right? Everyone there is-is so cool,” she sighs, smiling a bit. “And I’m just-not even close to being in their league.”
“Don’t say that!” Brooke scolds with a frown. “Peyton Sawyer is way cooler than any of those music execs.”
“You haven’t even met them.”
“I don’t need to,” she says firmly, sitting up and leaning over so she’s hovering over Peyton’s face. “You’re wonderful, Peyton.”
Peyton thinks of her dream and for a moment she can’t breathe. Brooke smiles and bends down and kisses her, briefly, sweetly, and when she pulls away, Peyton exhales.
Brooke flops back down on her side, then, and Peyton takes a moment to find her voice and whispers, “Brooke-Brooke, my dreams are so close right now.”
“I know,” Brooke whispers back. “Can’t you taste?”
And Peyton finds that she can.
