And the answer is kind of lame, but here we go:

Deities drag you here, take you from your world and drop you off without warning. They 'run' the place, supposedly and people can get out of here but not by choice. It just happens. The same way getting here happens.

Randomly. And usually, I hear, really bad timing.

No coordinates. Compasses don't even work well here.

Would you like current events for this place, or for our homes? Because there are people here from planets I've never heard of before. And etcetera. It's a pocket dimension, sort of-- it gathers life forms from various points, apparently in all of spacetime, and places them here at the whims of some entities which refer to themselves as Deities.

That is all the answer that I can give you. I'm not a physicist, I'm a geneticist.

There's a logical explanation for the lack of compasses. There's been a tampering with the magnetic field.

Yes. Sorry, I have a tendency to monologue, I suppose-- yes. Well, no. Not from everywhere. But there is a potentially for this place to bring in a person from anywhere, at any point in a timeline.

And stuck may not be the right word but currently an exit eludes our best and brightest, of which I am not a member of.
