you're not serious are you? that shawl calls for 5000 beads!!!! i know because i plan on making it too and have the materials(minus some of the beads) in my stash! also it looks like most of the people on ravelry have not used the full amount and still come out with fantastic looking shawls. i plan on using the full number, but because the beads are pre-strung instead of crochet-hooked into the pattern as you go, there's much less chance of losing any unless you break your yarn. 10000 beads is a LOT of beads.
I have an Aeolian question for you. Did you make the shoulderette or the big shawl? I've just finished my first ever piece of lace (let it block overnight and just unpinned it, and it looks fabulous -- pictures forthcoming sometime today!), and I'm already itching to start the next one.
I love the Aeolian pattern. I *love* it. But I'm wavering as to which version I want to do. I think I might actually like the littler one better, since there's more interesting pattern per square inch -- and I'm a little worried about getting in over my head on my second piece of lace. Also, the shoulderette looks huge to me -- much bigger than my swallowtail. But my ball of yarn has 1400yds (more than enough for either size) and the big one is spectacular, and it would be really satisfying to accomplish something of that magnitude, and it would be so nice to snuggle into a shawl the size of a bedsheet and still sashay around town looking elegant in the cold ... so I'm torn. Any thoughts?
well, obviously i'm not finished yet, but i've been attempting to do the large version. here's the thing. GET ON THE AEOLIAN KAL ON RAVELRY! DO IT! because it is awesome. this pattern is designed to be modified size-wise. there are two main patterns til you get to the edging; yucca and agave. the yuccas can be increased or reduced as long as you do it in pairs of repeats. the agaves can be reduced individually. there is a thread on the KAL listing who did how many repeats of what, how many yards it took, etc. and then you can follow their ravatar and search in the projects for pictures as to what it looked like. it's brilliant. also the designer is on there and people are VERY helpful when i have run into stumbling blocks.
Oooooooo, what an excellent idea! The KAL sounds absolutely fabulous, and how wonderful that you can actually decide how many of a pttern you want! I'd heard all kinds of bad things about Swallowtail patterns not fitting together because someone hadn't done the right math or whatever, but that sounds excellent :)
Thank you so much! And I can't *wait* to see the pictures when the lovely thing is done :)
If you do figure out a good jelly test, could you let me in on the secret? The sheet one failed me as well, and cooking it until the bubbling syrup causes fairly nasty immediate burns seemed to work, but isn't something I want to do on purpose.
