You know, I wish LJ had an option for “smart” quotation marks when posting, such that they replace ' and " with ‘, ’, “ and ” as appropriate.

And if your browser can’t display the appropriate marks, use a better font or a better browser.

It seems that some external programs that post to LJ do this already. Hmmm... I need to find them.

Smart wuotes would be good - except when they replace the quotes in HTML links - then things can get funny, as I found out. But if it's smart enough to tell the difference, then go for it.

Um... why though?

Except when using large fonts on a not-gigantic resolution screen, the difference is virtually undetectable. They're only really of relevance when printing, I've found - otherwise it's just 7 bytes of data where one would serve as well...

Actually, I’m moving away from Arial (which is the only font in which it is undetectable small). In most fonts, it’s almost identical to a comma, which is most definitely slanted even at 10 pt.
