A STUDY IN PINK
1. Ordinary Day- Vanessa Carlton
Ordinary John Watson meets the extraordinary Sherlock Holmes, and everything changes.

2. Skeleton Song- Kate Nash
Sherlock is a bit quirky and antisocial; he even has a skull that he talks to.

3. ET (Classical Cover)- Aston
Sherlock is also incredibly amazing and unique; a bit odd, but in a very intriguing and interesting way. The lyrics of the original fit rather well, but the classical cover seemed more 'Sherlock' to me.

Sherlock has changed John's life. Maybe not in a romantic way quite yet, but he's certainly given it new meaning and excitement. He's steadied his hands and he's astounded and awed him on multiple occasions.

Sherlock knows that he's odd, and he's skeptical on whether or not John really is willing to follow him everywhere. John has no such qualms and is eager to follow him into danger.

At this point, Sherlock is still concrete in his assumption that he has no feelings or weaknesses. He's taken John's empty smile and made it genuine, given him something to look forward to.

7. Turn Off the Lights- Panic at the Disco
Yes, Sherlock is exciting, but John's starting to wonder what the hell he's gotten himself into with this man as his companion.

8. Oh No- Marina and the Diamonds
I'm Sherlock Holmes, and I always work alone because no one can compete with my massive intellect. I also don't need your monetary incentive, Sebastian.

John notices how people tend to pull away from Sherlock a lot. Either that, or they ridicule him, which is very different from how John himself treats the man.

10. Animal- Neon Trees
John thinks about it and realizes that Sherlock really only has him. And, you know, maybe they could be more than friends. So he begins being a bit subtle and trying to get Sherlock to make a move.

11. Take Me Out- Franz Ferdinand
Sherlock feels much the same way, but he doesn't pick up on John's cues, especially not when Sarah comes into the picture. So while he's interested in John acting on it, he's remaining aloof about his feelings.

12. What I'm Looking For- Brendan Benson
John realizes that maybe it's too soon; they haven't known each other long enough, and Sherlock's said that he's married to his work. Maybe he needs to keep looking for now.

THE GREAT GAME
13. Bite Hard- Franz Ferdinand
Sherlock's not entirely ready to admit that he has feelings for John. It's platonic in his mind, and he merely appreciates John's company, and gets a little pissy when he walks out to see Sarah for the night though.
May be lonelier now but I'm happy oh no honest.

14. Cemeteries of London- Coldplay
John and Sherlock traipse around London, solving the riddles of Sherlock's 'fan.' They're surrounded by the threat of death, and a much more sinister plan lurks beneath the simple riddles.

15. Paparazzi- Lady Gaga
Granted the tone of this song may be a bit more humorous compared to the other songs, but it represents the introduction of Jim into John and Sherlock's lives. He's Sherlock's 'biggest fan' and has no intentions of allowing their relationship to be simple or easy.

16. Blood- Editors
While Sherlock's flattered by the attention, he refuses to recognize that he and Jim are anything alike. The only thing they have in common is the basic biology of life.

Jim suggests a little game, to test Sherlock's skills and his loyalty to John.

Suddenly John is in danger, and Sherlock doesn't like it. He doesn't want this for John, doesn't want his life to be constantly threatened because of him. But even more than that, he sees that John's quickly becoming his weakness.

Jim essentially says 'Come at me, bro' and challenges Sherlock to raise his weapon to see if he can get out of this alive with his 'pet' intact.

20. Le Disko- Shiny Toy Guns
Enter Irene Adler, a woman such as Sherlock Holmes has never encountered before. She's irritating in some ways, yes, but exciting and intriguing in others.

21. Dance, Dance Christa Paeffgen- Anberlin
Sherlock is completely fascinated by her, and wants to know more. He's eager to observe her and learn about her curious lifestyle.

22. Mr. Brightside- The Killers
John, however, realizes that he doesn't quite like Ms. Adler getting between him and Sherlock. Whether this is a result of sequestered feelings or just the fear of losing a friend, he doesn't know. All he knows is that he isn't fond of Irene.

23. A Million Ways to be Cruel- OK Go
Sherlock eventually sees that she's been leading him along, stringing him out, and playing on his interest in her. He finds this to be cruel and unattractive in the woman, and delights in being able to get her back with unraveling the mystery of her phone.

24. Moonlight Sonata- Beethoven
However, when Sherlock thought she was dead, he was melancholy. And even now, without her in his life, he holds a certain nostalgia for her, re-reading her texts.

Sherlock supposedly hates Mycroft. But in reality, he looks up to him. And when his brother says that "caring is not an advantage," Sherlock believes him. (For more info on Sherlock looking up to Mycroft, see this post)

26. Manic Depression- Emilie Autumn
Sherlock's addictions rear their heads, and he becomes manic and out of control, desperate for his fix.

While John is obvious in his admiration for Sherlock (be it romantic or otherwise, he's not sure at this point), Sherlock has a much harder time expressing his appreciation for John.

Sherlock doubts himself, and John attempts to extend a hand to help. But Sherlock would rather soak in his fear and his unpleasant feelings. This causes John to feel bitter.

29. So Contagious- Acceptance
Sherlock tries to explain to John that he's his only friend, and the most important person in his life, but he has a bit of trouble finding the appropriate words.

John decides to forgive Sherlock in the end, because he really is important to him. John knows that without Sherlock, he'd have nothing to really live for.

The episode ends with a shot of Jim in an interrogation room, and we're shown just how much he obsesses over Sherlock. This essentially sets the stage for Reichenbach.

Sherlock knows that this is the big finale, that something's coming and he needs to be prepared to face the challenge.

Jim is confident. There's no stopping him, because he holds the ace, and he controls all the puppet strings in this little fairytale of his.

Sherlock and John are high on adrenaline, and they run off into the night together, pursued by the police. But it doesn't matter because they're together and this is all very thrilling.

35. Prague- Damien Rice
Except that Sherlock knows this isn't all fun and games. He knows the end is coming and that he'll have to face Jim on his own to resolve this. He has no way out, other than to pay Jim's game.

This is the end. Sherlock has to leave everything he knows behind, and he has to hurt those he loves most to be able to save them.

John doesn't see the whole picture. He only sees Sherlock leaving him, jumping from the roof of the hospital and leaving him all alone to face a mundane and empty life.

Sherlock stands silently watching his grave, thinking about John. He's realized that he loved John all along, and that the doctor truly was and always will be his sweetest downfall and only weakness.

THE AFTERMATH
39. Woke Up New- The Mountain Goats
John wakes up for the first time without Sherlock. He's numb, and he doesn't quite know what to do with himself.
On the morning when I woke up without you for the first time,

And I began to talk to myself almost immediately,
Not being used to being the only person there.
40. Ever- Emilie Autumn
Looking back, John realizes that all those 'maybe's could have been 'yes's. He's always loved Sherlock. He just didn't realize it until it was too late.

John has finally gotten past his feelings enough to truly say goodbye to Sherlock. It still hurts, but he's come to terms with the fact that he won't be seeing him anymore.

Here we see the re-emergence of Sherlock. The detective is determined to get back to John, whatever the cost. He needs to tell him how he feels and needs to make things right.

John is finally reunited with Sherlock, and he's stunned. His first reaction is anger and hurt, and he wonders where Sherlock was that he couldn't have even phoned or contacted him somehow.

Sherlock confesses his love for John, and tells him that thinking of him is what got him through the time abroad. John is all that matters to him.
