Summary: Suho is the new Alpha of a depleted and damaged pack.
Prologue
Suho sighed as he looked at his depleted pack, so many had died in the past few weeks, especially the last battle. The enemy pack was annihilated but they were a hairs width away from the same fate.
Their pack of over thirty was down to six, only two of which were alphas and one was an omega. Baekhyun could defend himself to a certain degree but if left for himself he would be at the mercy of whichever arsehole alpha got to him first and Suho dreaded to think how they would treat him. Omegas were coveted but only for their wombs, Baekhyun would hate to be treated as an incubator. Their previous Alpha had protected Baekhyun in every way and had instilled in his pack that omegas were to be respected, not treated like a lesser being only good for a fuck. Baekhyun had been securely guarded during every heat, no alpha allowed anywhere near him. He’d never been bred and was the pack’s baby, the only child of their respected Alpha.
Only omegas could bear children and they could only be mated with alphas, that meant either he or Kai. Baekhyun had already rejected both of them on previous occasions and he didn’t want to force the boy; he had just lost his father and most of his pack. Even if he did suddenly decide he wanted children, they wouldn’t reach maturity for years.
Suho felt the heavy weight of responsibility fall upon him. He had been the packs Third, a rank that he had fought for and earnt. He had never thought that he would one day be in charge, the Alpha and his Second had seemed unbeatable, yet here he was, the Alpha. The pack was in shambles, the few that were left wounded and exhausted.
He waved to his Second, gesturing him over.
“Kai, I think we need to go hunting for fresh blood.”
“What do you mean?” The boy was young and unexperienced, only bitten a couple of years ago. He’d been homeless, young, healthy and appetising enough that the previous Second hadn’t been able to resist turning him for the pack. He was way too young for this role but he was the only other alpha to survive and so he had to step up.
“We need more members. The pack is weak, damaged and if we don’t act fast we will lose our territory, be attacked and killed. New wolves are disorganised, difficult and weak but if we turn them now, they will be useful and ready for the future. We can’t wait until we are more settled, there is no time. We are too vulnerable and we have Baekhyun to consider.” Suho nodded in the direction of the pack’s weakest, who was currently being comforted by two betas, Kyungsoo and Sehun. Chanyeol, the third beta, was on patrol around their temporary hide out.
“Okay.” Kai nodded, his gaze more certain than it had been a few minutes previously. In was in an alphas makeup that they had to protect the omegas. Their races biological survival instinct meant that it was impossible to intentional harm an omega, the only time they were harmed was in mating, when an alpha could go crazy when they smelt an omega in heat. “When should we go? We can’t leave at the same time.”
“Three days to decide and make a choice. We’ll take it in turns to go out and scour the district. We each bring back a candidate. Two wolves should do for now, we can turn more in a couple of moon’s time. More than two and we’ll lose control of them.”
“Understood. Shall I go now? I was meaning to check on Chanyeol and the borders anyway.” Suho nodded his consent.
Suho watched as his Second slipped away. He needed another alpha and he hoped that one of the two that they would turn would be one.
Alphas were stronger and more commanding than betas. Without alphas their pack would die, only an alpha could lead. Increasing the pack was also another thing only alphas could do, either by breeding with an omega or by turning a human. Betas were good for pack growth, they guarded, fed, healed and generally helped pack welfare. Omegas were precious, rare and fiercely guarded by any pack that was lucky to have one. Omegas could bear pups, and those pups were guaranteed to be either an alpha or an omega, thus assuring the packs future. Also werewolves who are born are twice as powerful if they are alphas and twice as fertile if they were omegas.
Baekhyun had been the youngest out of his father’s children, and the only one still surviving. His father had been an old wolf, one of the oldest and most powerful in the city, and greatly respected for it. He had kept his nose out of the murky world of pack politics that the rest of the city had been swamped with. And no one had bothered Baekhyun while the pack had him as their Alpha, though a few from other packs had tried to court him.
That was until one of the other packs got a new Alpha. It was a pack that had been fairly friendly with them until recently. Some new wolves joined, there was in-fighting and then suddenly they had a new Alpha, a former rogue who had gone power mad. He wanted an omega and he had set his eyes on Baekhyun. Small skirmishes turned into larger fights which turned into a bloodbath. The other pack was dead but it was almost mutual destruction.
He considered his situation. Kai was inexperienced with leadership and still hesitant. Chanyeol was their best beta fighter, their unofficial Third as a beta couldn’t officially be Third. Sehun and Kyungsoo were also good fighters, and Kyungsoo was a good healer. His knowledge had saved Sehun after the battle and was the only reason their pack wasn't one less than it already was. They were all reliable and had great team work which was almost definitely how they survived. Baekhyun, Suho sighed, Baekhyun was a blessing and a curse. Baekhyun was valuable, that was if he was being bred, but Suho didn’t want him to be forced into a situation, besides they couldn’t protect young right now. A couple new wolves would be more of a liability than an aid, at least for the first few weeks. With their vulnerability at the present moment, he feared that another pack might attack in order to get him. He stared at the omega as he wondered what on earth he was going to do.

So I had this idea at work (cos I have the most mind numbing job in the world and my mind is off with the fairies for most of it) and I decided to write it down. Will post first chapter as soon as possible.
Rather embarrassing but I posted the wrong version before - I did originally mean for Sehun to be an omega but I switched it for Baekhyun just cos I like LuBaek ^^. I was half asleep when I did that... *shuffles awkwardly* Doubt too many people read it anyway.
