I would suggest the ever popular simple black dress with a shawl perhaps ( ... )

Yeah, you can't go wrong with a little black dress. And the shawl makes it very classy. ^^ If you need even more classy yet, try pearls. But keep it very, very simple. That is the main thing. Classy=simple, always.

I definitely will say don't wear jeans, and generally only the really dedicated or crazy wear formal attire (or if it's a very special event). Some people do wear jeans, but then the regular theatre-goers throw dirty looks. Either a simple dress or a skirt/pretty shirt is my typical theatre attire, or a nice sweater/shirt and black pants if you don't want to buy a dress or skirt.

As for length...anything but mini pretty much goes. I managed to find a skirt at Deb's that is asymmetrical, black, just-above-knee to mid-calf length and has layers for really cheap (I think it was on sale or clearance, but *shrugs* clearance rocks) for a pseudo-formal fundraiser event that my boyfriend had to go to, and at the same place I managed to find a gorgeous burgandy color shirt with one of those low-cut loose-fabric-drapey necklines for also pretty cheap (the entire outfit, plus a $7 necklace cost me about $30) to go with it. I've worn floor-length dresses, above-the-knee length dresses/skirts, I've worn slacks and khakis and various other types of dress pants...

When I'm home later I'll try to find some good pics, and maybe I can find a couple of pics of me at the theatre, too...

I can't help you out since I wear jeans and t-shirts ALL the time. I just wanted to say that I agree with your toe statement.

Hehe. I think we're the only two people like this though, or else not so many people would wear sandals.

-----and I only own 10 formals------
Good luck and enjoy
