I'm looking for a knitted version of, like a gardening-tool bag, or a grooming apron/tote --- you know, sort of pockets on the outside and kind of a flat bottom or a fold-up type deal
( Read more... )
I thought of that; but then I thought, the finished product will sort of look 'baskety' and then there goes the 'manly' look, *L* I should have called it 'gentlemanly', as he's a real gentleman, and that's more of what I meant.
If you're intending this to be used for anything even a little heavy, be aware that knitting stretches terribly - I mean, a lot, and it generally looks awful, in my estimation, when it does.
If you're dead-set on knitting it, perhaps a solid (fabric or canvas) inside, with the knitting as a second layer?
And to answer your question: any pattern will be, in essence, a "simple tote shape ... [with] some rectangles". So don't worry on that score. And I second the suggestion to use twine or jute or a thick, heavy cotton. It'll stretch less, for one, and will be more heavy-wearing.
I thought of lining it, but I also am rather keen to felt something. So as I said to Bouwert above, I think jute or twine will seem like a basket, which is more feminine to my mind. But you're right; pretty much any pattern will be fine, I appreciate your reassurance, as I just thought of this the other day as a gift, and now I have to think fast!
Here's a general suggestion - what about knitting a rectangle that's the width you desire, then twice the length you want. Fold it in half, seam the side and seam up it to divide the pockets. Ideally, I would make it out of wool and felt it for added strength, and a more manly look. (Just make sure you add in extra length and width to account for the felting. You could then add on a handle, strings to tie it on, whatever you like. If you want more of a bag, then a rectangle with storage pockets (I'm envisioning like a apron), then I'm afraid I don't have any suggestions.
Yeah! I was thinking, make it big enough, and then sew it to make it 'sit' as well as add pockets, that's very helpful to my mind the way you've laid it out.
As I said to another person, I should have called it 'gentlemanly' rather than manly, and I think felting some heavy-duty wool will create the look I want. And add to the color selection.
I cast on my first stitches this afternoon for a little bowl to practice felting, as I've not done that before.
