Tony let himself into his apartment, dropping back to collapse against the door with a sigh, eyes clenched shut tightly. It had been a long day, and he was tired.

“What are you doing here?” He asked, his eyes remaining closed. He dragged a hand over his face, before looking up at Gibbs tiredly.

Gibbs looked mildly taken aback by the pure exhaustion in Tony’s face. “I, uh, wanted to say goodbye.” He said gruffly.

“Right.” Tony pushed himself off the door, and turned to unlock it. “Well, bye.”

“DiNozzo, wait.” Gibbs said imploringly.

Tony turned to face his former boss, a glint of anger in his eyes. “I did wait, Gibbs! I waited for a damn long time, with nothing to show for it. I let you fuck me, and order me around, and I never asked for anything, not once, and you still walked all over me. All I ever wanted was a sign that it was something more.”

They stood for a moment, staring at each other, before Gibbs found his tongue again. “I’m sorry,” He said lamely, the words sounding empty and useless even to his own ears.

“Don’t be. I expected too much of you.” Tony ran his hand through his hair, grabbing at it roughly. He let out a harsh bark of laughter, the sound grating and rough, torn through with exhaustion and grief. "The day you left I thought I would die. Strange thing was that was when I truly began to live."

Gibbs flinched back at the words, but Tony didn’t seem to notice. “You know, I really thought I couldn’t live without you, and then, I started to have fun. I didn’t have to live in fear that I would screw up, I didn’t have to lie to my friends and co-workers, I didn’t have to make up stories about women. I was as close to happy as I can get, and then you came back and blew my life apart again.”

“I didn’t know,” Gibbs whispered.

“Yeah, well, I didn’t tell you, so…” Tony frowned. “I think you should go, Gibbs.”

“I never meant to hurt you,” Gibbs muttered.

Tony looked up to meet his eyes with tired honesty. “I know. But Gibbs, I… I don’t think I can survive being with you again.”

Gibbs nodded at the finality of the words, and left silently, cursing himself as he went.
