It was the only way any of this made any sort of sense.
It’d been surprising enough when Eiri had offered-offered-to keep the Seguchi child for the weekend. But, well, he had a deadline rapidly approaching and Shuichi just figured he was using the distraction of babysitting his niece as an excuse for not getting work done. That was a little naughty, but definitely not unlike him, so Shuichi went along with it.
But it was the other stuff. The stuff that happened after the little one got there. That was what left the singer truly dumbfounded. Like the way he smiled at her. And spoke to her. And pretended to understand when she babbled at him in return. And tickled her. And let her crawl all over him. And let her eat some of his strawberry cake.
And now-now there she was, sitting in his lap and tapping her chubby little fingers on his laptop keyboard like she owned the thing. And he was just watching. Watching. With amusement in his eyes.
It wasn’t fair, dammit!
“I don’t get it.”
“What’s there to get?” Eiri asked without looking at him. “She’s cuter than you.”
Shuichi scoffed. “She is not!”
In retaliation, the girl giggled-the sound pure sweetness-and the singer slunk away in defeat.
