Mary Jo: “When they were little, the girls were allowed to wear whatever they wanted. Emily, who’s older, once worse a bather suit to school. It was pouring rain. I always thought you learn with trial and error.”
Zooey: “I hated wearing pants. Every day I’d wear these smock dresses. My mom doesn’t like jeans either. She is about individuality and fit and proportion”
Emily: “The Advice mom gave us was to put on lipstick and that would solve the problems of the world. We are pale people and need a little color. And she told us to choose friends who make use feel better about ourselves and not worse.”
Zooey: “We are all straightforward. She never likes when we say ‘It’s not my fault.’ In kindergarten I stole a tallow marker from the classroom. My mom made me bring it back, tell my teacher I was sorry, and take responsibility.“
Emily: “Mom always said that talking responsibility for mistakes is more important than taking credit for good things.”
Mary Jo: “Zooey wanted to be an actor at a young age; Emily was a little older. They were able to transform themselves into characters and would always put on little plays. They did a lot of Westerns. I wanted them to be free to follow their own path and find out who they were- and feel supported.”
Emily: “Mom would take us to old movie houses to watch films; she made is think acting was an OK thing to do. She was in The Right Stuff when I was 5 and Twin Peaks when we were older.”
Mary Jo: “We get along and give each other advice. I can go to Emily or Zooey if ever I have a problem. They really help me.”
Zooey: “Last year Emily and I both had breakups within a week of each other. We were all at home in L.A., and it was this total girl talk. We are so lucky- it’s nice to be living in the same city as our mom.”
